EMT training is an intense road but the career is fufilling.
An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provide lifesaving care for the sick or injured while transporting them to a medical facility. EMTs often work in ambulances and are dispatched to the scene of the accident. This job requires irregular working hours and sometimes hostile work environments that can be horrific and unsettling. To become an EMT in New York, you must undergo specialized training and certification.
Instructions
1. Complete an Emergency Medical Technician Certification program at an institution accredited by the New York State Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Training centers are located throughout the state. The NYS Bureau of Emergency Medical Services offers five medical certifications. These include Certified First Responder (CFR), Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (AEMT-I), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Critical Care (AEMT-CC) and the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (AEMT-P). All but the CFR certification can be obtained to apply for an EMT position in the state of New York. The price for EMT certification will vary from institution and the type of certification you receive; however as a point of reference, the New York Emergency Care Programs charges $995 as of 2010 for the EMT-B certification.
2. Contact the regional EMS council where you wish to work after you have obtained your EMT certification. The New York State Bureau of EMS features a list of all councils within the NYS as well as their contact information. Inform the council you are interested in applying for an EMT position. Be prepared to provide the council with your EMT certification number, driver's license number, home address and telephone number when you call. Depending on the council, you may be required to fax or mail your resume; however, most council require you to fill out an application and when a position is available someone will contact you.
3. Perform all testing required for an EMT position within your region. Physical agility and psychological tests are normally required as well as criminal background checks before a region can offer you an entry-level EMT position. The region you are applying in will inform you of any pre-employment testing. After you have completed all testing to the satisfaction of the EMS regional council you will be offered a position an entry-level EMT position.
Tips Warnings
Do not apply for an EMT position if you have not gained NYS certification. If you are certified in another state, contact the regional EMS council to discover the reciprocity process for your region.
An EMT is often faced with challenging and sometimes horrific scenes, thus if you are unable to handle yourself in stressful situations this may not be the right career choice for you.
