No home office would be complete without a printer and the convenience it offers. With the click of a button, you can print a receipt or a favorite picture without leaving your home. Unfortunately, even the best printers must occasionally be replaced, and many computer users are concerned about the environmental impact of simply throwing a printer in the garbage. In fact, some states have laws prohibiting the disposal of computer products in the trash. There are several earth-friendly ways to dispose of used printers that will benefit others without causing harm to the planet.
Instructions
1. Donate your used printer to a thrift store, school or charity. As long as the printer is in functioning condition, many organizations will accept your printer to resell or use. Before you donate your printer, you should clean the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Contact the organization you want to donate to and ask if they will pick up the printer or if they have designated drop-off times for donations.
2. Recycle your old printer. Contact a local or online recycling company and request they take your printer. In an effort to reduce landfill waste, many recycling companies now take printers. Almost every part of a printer may be recycled, including the battery. If none of your local recycling companies take printers, contact your computer printer's manufacturer to see if they accept used printers. Some companies now take back old printers and even offer coupons or discounts as an incentive. Recycling companies may pick up the printer from your home or ask you to mail it to them.
3. Give your printer to another computer user. Even if your printer is no longer in working condition, offer it to your local community in case a neighbor or fellow community member can use it for parts. Most cities now have local online bulletin boards or trading websites, so post an ad describing your printer and offer it for free to anyone who wants it.
