Larson Storm Door?
I replaced my storm doors with Larson's over a year ago. I like them for the most part EXCEPT, the door handle is not solid brass and has flaked off, making them look like crap. The dead bolt locks etc on the storm door are fine. Can I replace just the handle on the inside and outside. Can I move the lock cyclinder into the new lever? Thanks, Depends on the model. Unfortunately, I don't know anywhere where you can buy just handles, most come as a complete handle hardware set. Maybe someone else can help with a source? I also have Larson doors and you are absolutely correct, their handles are junk. I have exactly the same problem. I'll be watching this thread with interest. I have also thought about contacting Larson directly to see if they would give me new hardware and how often they would give me new hardware. I almost posted that they had lifetime warranties on the brass finish...glad I checked their website. 1 year warranty on handles but does not include finish. I would have thought it would have been better. Andersen warranties the finish for life (one time replacement). There are aftermarket sets that will fit some Larson doors, can't remember the brand. If you can provide the dimensions of the handles in question, there are other manufacturers that make handle sets totally in brass. Also worth noting there are processes that can add lifetime durability to plating. You can take your hardware to a plating company and have then refinished. It can be expensive, depending on where you go. Not allowed to mention company names on this forum. The only allowed advertising is from the site owner. Individual parts availability will vary from door to door. Yes, I spoke to Larson and I have the part number, except I dont want to relace one piece of garbadge with another(the handle). If I have to replace the entire lock, with a solid bass one, that would be fine the one door is 1 7/8 thick and the other is 1 5/8 any idea where I can pick these up in Solid Brass. Can you confirm the distance between the center of the wider part of the cylinder hole and the center of the spindle. And the distance between the retaining screw holes? I know of 2 companies that provide reasonable quality solid brass handles in many and varied sizes. They will even custom drill holes for you (if you ask nicely). Both companies import their product from India, but the product is of exceptional quality and finish. I have 3 Larson Stormdoors and replaced 2 inside handles with Larson replacements. The third handle failed and the brass finish is comming off of the outside handle too. After trying to find the parts on Larson's site, I gave up and went bought a whole solid brass handle set from Grady's Hardware, Inc. It is a Wright Product VGB 115PB for about $30. Delivery was 1 week. I'm impressed with the sturdy design and great finish. I'll replace my other 2 handles ith the same thing. I've also got a 7-year-old Larson storm door in which the outer lock finish is quite tarnished....the locks referenced in Grady's website are Wright brand...I noticed that the pnumatic closers that came with my door have the Wright brand logo on them, so even tho my lock has no name, it could also be Wright brand. It resembles part No. EMT 115 PB on the website (mine has a profile cylinder)(Euro style) and indeed, the description says it's a direct replacement for most storm door locks. Hopefully the replacement lock is better made than the original equipment lock, as I'll be ordering one also. It appears the website referenced is an Ace Hardware store that has it's own site.You may be able to get the same hardware from an Ace local to you.Even if they don't have it in stock they can order it for you,have it in a couple of days,and you won't pay a cent for shipping. I did check a local Ace Hdwe store here, they did indeed have a few of those Wright locks...same part no. etc, but they wanted $51 for the one that Grady's wants $29 for...so even with SH, prob'ly cheaper from Grady's....pays to shop around, huh? Wonder if Home Depot or Lowes has them... Yes HD and Lowes carry SOME of the Wright hardware. It depends on your region. Out here, the HD doesn't even carry storm doors...lol. Just security screen doors and cheap screen doors. I'm skeptical about the huge price difference between sources of the hardware.I'm not doubting the OP but I know what things cost and that relationship to profit,margin and so forth. The figures suggest original cost of the item is well under the 29 dollar figure.Retail margins are not beyond 45% on this type of hardware. The only way it works is if the online source is making basically no profit. Ace dealers can price as they see fit but this doesn't add up to me.Ace would give you an MSRP based on mid 40's margin.Curious to know if the Ace store has any competition near by. Hmmm Lowes has the same surface mount handle set for $38 on their website vs the $27 on Grady's. The $50+ price does seem high. Lowes has a similar mortise style set for $45. Maybe the one rstripe saw was mispriced or hung on the wrong spot? Got a little more info on the price difference....this store USED to be an Ace Hardware store, but is now privately owned...an employee told me they buy most of their stuff from the same sources as Ace, but are no longer affiliated with them. And tho I didn't ask, it may be one of those employee-owned stores; mostly older folks, lots of them, all eager to help you find stuff....i.e. high overhead=high prices. Well just to be clear Ace doesn't own any stores it's a dealer owned co-op aka a franchise.I guess this store somehow quit Ace but they've got to be buying through a wholesaler like Ace to be competative that said this would explain a higher pricing level. There are some smaller regional wholesalers and some smaller national names like Do It Best.Probably one of those. Well, I stopped by Lowes on my way home tonite and they did have the Wright VMT115PVD (the mortise lock version), and only $26.95 so I got it. It says Lifetime Finish (not lifetime warranty on finish) (surface version is same $). Not an exact replacement, had to enlarge a few holes in door. Main difference from my 7-year old orig lock is 3/8 throw deadbolt vs. 5/8 throw, operated by a round clipped-in Schlage-keyway cylinder vs. a profile cylinder. (Euro flavour retained-- cylinder is upside down). Latch has a plastic anti-friction thing on it. Strike plate is flat with no curved lip. Oh well, works fine. I realize this is an old site but anyhow,,,I recently got a larson door used it was in great shape outside of the exterior handle was pitted. It looked like the plating had failed and under it it looked like whitemetal. I stuck it on the buffing wheel and took all the plating off and it was solid brass underneath. I polished it up and gave it several coats of clear lacquer and it looks great. I cant guarantee it had the original lock but I think it is. So do a little digging before you start spending. Ah!.....to be retired, and have the time (and the health) to do all we'd like to do!..... Just to set the record straight....gettin' old ain't for sissies, so treasure your youth...good knees, etc. I have a larson storm door and need to get a new door handle. I've had problems with the handle falling apart. Anyone know where to get a replacement? Lindagm Depending on the model and type of handle Lowes, HD, and many independent hardware stores carry Wright hardware...which MAY be compatible. If not...Lowes can order the appropriate one. Might want to check with Larson customer service first. Again..depending on model, it may be free.
