Airsoft Gun Laws In Illinois

You must be at least 13 in Illinois to have an airsoft gun

An airsoft gun is a gun that fires plastic projectiles by means of compressed air or gas instead of by burning a propellant. In the United States, airsoft guns are used largely for recreational purposes and are not treated like or classified as a firearm. Airsoft guns are legal in Illinois, though some cities have age restrictions for selling and possession.

Illinois Air Rifle Act

The Illinois Air Rifle Act requires individuals be at least 13 years of age to own, operate or buy an airsoft gun. The law also makes it unlawful to shoot airsoft rifles toward streets, sidewalks, roads and other public areas, except for public target ranges.

Other Age Restrictions

In Elk Grove Village, Lombard, Niles and Streamwood, individuals must be at least 18 years of age to purchase an airsoft gun and must be at least 17 to purchase an airsoft gun in Downers Grove. In River Forest it is unlawful to sell an airsoft gun to anyone under the age of 21. Additionally, in Lombard and Niles an individual must also be 18 to possess an airsoft gun.

Removal of Orange Tip

Many airsoft guns come with an orange tip on the barrel to help mark it as an airsoft gun and not a firearm. Previously, it was illegal in Illinois to remove the tip, though it isn't anymore. Owners of airsoft guns can remove the orange cap if they so desire.
