Cures For Swollen Eyes From Crying

Crying makes ocular tissues swell.

Tears are produced by the lachrymal glands in the top outside corners of the eyes. Tears spill out of the eye and filter through the skin into the ocular tissues. The ocular tissues are full of salt, so when the salt and tears mix it causes the ocular tissues to swell. Rubbing the eyes during or after crying can make swelling and redness even worse. Use these simple remedies to reduce swelling and redness induced by crying.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers help reduce eye swelling.

Prepare several cucumber slices by chilling them in the freezer for about five minutes. Place a slice of chilled cucumber on each eyelid for three to five minutes, then grab two fresh slices from the freezer and repeat this process every few minutes for 20 minutes. Apple and raw potato slices will also work quite well.

Cold Cloth

Fold a few ice cubes in a wet cloth and hold on eyes for about three minutes. Reapply every five minutes until swelling is down.

Cool Tea Bags

Apply chilled caffeinated tea bags to reduce swelling.

Moisten and chill several tea bags that contain caffeine for about 10 minutes. Remove the tea bags from the refrigerator and place them on the eyelids. Replace with cold tea bags every five minutes for a total of 20 minutes.

Eye Cream

Apply an aloe and vitamin E-enriched eye cream to the eye lids to reduce swelling.

Eye Press

Soak flat cotton pads in witch hazel or rose water. Apply pads to closed eyes for 15 to 20 minutes.
