Make Impressions In The Sand Kits

Impressions in the Sand kits preserve the imprints of small children's appendages.

An Impressions in the Sand kit is a popular gift to give to new parents, allowing them to create a keepsake preserving their baby's footprint or handprint for future years. The kit contains a picture frame, sand and plaster of paris, which are combined to make a relief print of of the child's palm or foot. While such kits can be purchased from most craft stores, you can make your own almost as easily and much cheaper, combining the necessary items and packaging it attractively.

Instructions

1. Fill a plastic bag with two cups of sand and add a little water to moisten it. Seal the bag. Fill a second bag with two cups of gypsum powder and seal it as well.

2. Place the two bags in an attractive box together with a small picture frame, a backboard of the same size and two large rubber bands.

3. Write directions to accompany the kit, either in your best handwriting or with a cute font, telling the reader use the kit. Instruct her to attach backboard to the front of the frame with rubber bands and half-fill frame with sand, adding extra water if dry. The reader's child should now make a handprint or footprint in the sand. Tell the reader to mix two parts plaster powder with one part water and pour over sand, covering the entire surface and filling in the child's print. Direct the reader to finish by waiting an hour for the plaster to harden, move the backboard to the back of the frame and wipe away all sand, leaving the child's print as a relief.

4. Place the instructions in the kit and tie the box shut with a ribbon in a bow. Decorate as desired.
