Handmade Gift Ideas For Girls

Make a gift by hand for the girl in your life.

Handmade gifts often become treasures for a lifetime. Make your girl a gift that's something useful she will enjoy now or something special that she'll cherish for years to come. Put some thought into it. Take your girl's age into account. Most of all, tailor the gift to her personality.

Little Girls Ages 4 to 7

Little girls love dolls, and a handmade doll from you is guaranteed to be a hit, even if sewing isn't your thing. Try an easy project with a plain white T-shirt. Lay it flat, draw the shape of a doll body in the size you want, and cut through both pieces of fabric. Stitch the wrong sides together with white embroidery thread and leave open spaces to add stuffing. Stitches can be large and uneven. After the doll is stuffed, sew up the remaining seams, then sew some yarn hair to the head. Finish by painting on a face and some clothes with fabric paints.

Big Girls Ages 8 to 10

Big girls love graphic T-shirts, and you can make one for your big girl using stretchable iron-on fabric transfers. First, buy a solid-color T-shirt and fabric transfers. Create a design on your computer using clip art, words or even photographs, then print out the design on a fabric transfer. Tailor it to her personality. For example, a feminine girl may like a crown design with the words 100% Princess. Iron the fabric transfer onto the T-shirt and enjoy seeing your big girl show it off.

Tweens Ages 11 to 13

Tweens are just beginning to enjoy the privacy and personal space of a bedroom. Add to your tween's room with a cute wall organizer. Start with a piece of colorful canvas fabric that's 3 feet by 3 feet. Hot glue ribbon to the edges. Stitch on fabric pockets in varying sizes. Make some pockets out of clear vinyl so she can put photos inside them. Decorate with colorful shapes and designs made from iron-on transfers. Hot glue fabric loops on the back so she can hang it in her room.

Teenagers Ages 14 to 19

Teens will love a custom tote bag to carry around books, make up and electronic gadgets. Buy a solid color canvas tote, then decorate it with iron-on transfers or fabric paints. Base decor on her interests. For example, use graphics of pom-poms and megaphones for a cheerleader or sports equipment for a volleyball or softball player. Make sure to include her name, or just add an elegant touch with a simple monogram. Hot glue ribbons, plastic jewels or feather boa material for a glam look.
