Remove The Thermocouple In A Heat & Glo Fireplace

When the pilot will not stay lit on your Heat Glo fireplace, it might be necessary to remove the thermocouple for cleaning or replacement. The Heat Glo uses two burner tubes with a thermocouple in the center. The thermocouple cuts the gas supply to the burner tubes when the pilot goes out and no longer heats the thermocouple. Removing the thermocouple in a Heat Glo fireplace is much like with any other gas appliance. If a replacement is necessary, take the old one to the store to ensure you purchase a new one that is the same length and has the same size connections.

Instructions

1. Turn the gas valve on the front of the Heat Glo fireplace to the Off position. Allow the fireplace to cool completely before attempting to remove the thermocouple.

2. Place a sheet or some newspaper on the floor in front of the fireplace. Lift the decorative gas logs up and pull them out of the Heat Glo, placing them on the sheet or newspaper.

3. Loosen the nut securing the thermocouple to the rear of the gas valve with a wrench. There are three tubes on the back of the gas valve. The two side tubes are burner tubes. The center copper tube is the thermocouple.

4. Pull the end of the thermocouple out of the back of the gas control valve. Follow the copper tube where it secures to the pilot assembly near the center of the fireplace.

5. Turn the nut on the bottom of the pilot assembly plate securing the thermocouple with the wrench. Once the nut is loose, pull the end of the thermocouple through the mounting plate. Pull the entire thermocouple out of the Heat Glo fireplace.

Tips Warnings

If the tip shows signs of soot, clean it with an emery cloth and reinstall it in the fireplace.

Replacement thermocouples are available at appliance repair centers.
