Keep party guests busy and happy with fun games.
Balloons, friends, cake and, of course, games make a birthday fun. Happy Birthday games come in a wide variety of types, from action games that get your guests moving, to quiet, mental games that help calm the mood of the event. A party hostess should plan to have at least one of each type of game, if practical, to keep guests entertained.
Pass the Mystery Gift
Wrap a generic gift in multiple layers of wrapping paper. Game plays similar to Hot Potato, where guests pass the gift around in a circle until the music stops. Have the group sing Happy Birthday and pass the gift from person to person. The person who is holding the gift at the time the end of the song is reached unwraps one layer. The game continues until the last layer of wrapping paper has been removed. The player to unwrap the final layer wins the gift.
Birthday Anagrams
Write Happy Birthday on a whiteboard, or use a birthday banner. Give guests paper and pens, and ask them to see how many new words they can make out of the letters in Happy Birthday. Set a time limit, say, five minutes, and see who has the most words. If there is a dispute on a word, the birthday girl makes the final decision.
Catch the Balloon
Secretly assign a number to each guest. The birthday boy holds a balloon and calls out a number while dropping the balloon. The guest who is assigned to the number the birthday boy calls out tries to catch the balloon before it touches the floor. If the player catches the balloon, she becomes it and calls out another number to continue playing.
Shopping List - Who Am I?
The guests sit in a circle, and one player leaves the room. While the player is absent, the other guests collectively decide on what persona she should assume when she returns to the game. The player returns to the game and asks the other players for a Shopping List of items she should buy for herself. One by one, guests give her clues as to who she is by what items they tell her to buy. The game continues until she guesses what or who she is. For instance, if she is to be a princess, the other guests may suggest she buy a crown, a scepter and a castle.
