For prospective students, South Carolina is home to many schools offering journalism and communications programs. With 18 four-year schools and two two-year schools offering programs in journalism and/or communications, prospective students have a lot of information to digest when selecting a college. Many of South Carolina's colleges and universities have roots in religion or the military. Three well-established schools offering journalism and communication programs are the University of South Carolina, Clemson University and Furman University.
The University of South Carolina
Home of the Gamecocks, the University of South Carolina was founded in 1801 in Columbia. The university boasts eight campuses and offers more than 324 degree programs. The School of Journalism and Mass Communications is located on the Columbia campus. Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication are offered in Advertising, Broadcast Journalism, Journalism (with and without concentration in Mass Communications), Public Relations and Visual Communications. Opportunities to study abroad also are available. During spring break, students can study community and communication in Jamaica. In May, students have the the opportunity to study multimedia journalism in Munich and Berlin. Full semester student exchanges are offered by Teesside University in Middlesbrough, England, Griffith College in Dublin, Ireland, and Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication also offers graduate programs leading to a Master of Mass Communication or a Master of Arts. In 2009-2010, the average undergraduate tuition was $9,386 for South Carolina residents and $24,962 for nonresidents.
Clemson University
Clemson College opened in 1896 and was renamed Clemson University in 1964. Located in Clemson, the home of the Tigers offers a Bachelor of Arts program in communications that allows students to focus on one of seven interdisciplinary fields: interpersonal communication, organizational communication, media and mass communication, sports communication, health communication, public relations and rhetorical criticism. Clemson offers international exchange programs for students. The exchange programs and locations vary by year and faculty selection. A new graduate program, the Master of Arts in Communication, Technology and Society, is available at Clemson. Estimated tuition for 2010-2011 is $12,346 for undergraduates residing in South Carolina and $27,858 for nonresidents.
Furman University
In 1826, Furman University opened its doors in Greenville. The home of the Paladins has two campuses and requires students to take at least one course dealing with human interaction with nature. The Bachelor of Arts in Communication program provides students with a general knowledge base in a variety of fields, including broadcasting, public relations and business communications. Undergraduate tuition fees for 2010-2011 are $37,728.
Other Journalism and Communication Programs
South Carolina offers many more schools to prospective journalism and communication students. Two schools provide two-year options; Spartanburg Community College and Trident Technical College. Eight schools offer four-year programs in communications and/or mass communications, including Coastal Carolina University in Conway; Francis Marion University in Florence; Claflin University in Orangeburg; Coker College in Hartsville; Morris College in Sumter; Newburry College and Southern Wesleyan University in Central; and Columbia College. Columbia College is unique because it admits female students exclusively. Denmark's Voorhees College offers an undergraduate program in mass media. Five schools offer four-year programs with specialized programs in communications, including Winthrop University in Rock Hill; Benedict College in Columbia; Bob Jones University in Greenville, North Greenville University in Tigerville; and Webster University. Webster University has seven campuses throughout South Carolina. The College of Charleston offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in communications.
