Surround sound systems support more than two channels of audio.
You can connect Comcast receivers to a surround sound system as long as the type of receiver you are using shares a common type of multichannel audio connection with the surround sound system's amplifier or receiver. Comcast's receivers use optical audio (S/PDIF), HDMI, or coaxial cables to connect to surround sound systems. You can connect the Comcast receiver to a surround sound system using RCA, the red and white plug cables, but it will only output the audio in stereo and not surround sound.

Hook Up Surround Sound to a Comcast Receiver Using Optical Audio
1. The closest black cable is using an optical audio connection type.
Connect the Comcast receiver's Optical audio port to the Optical Audio port on the surround sound system's receiver or amplifier with an optical audio cable. If the surround sound system is connected to a receiver that is connected to the TV, connect the optical audio cable to the same channel on which the video is connected.
2. Turn on the Comcast receiver and the surround sound system's amplifier or receiver.
3. Select the channel that the Comcast receiver is connected to on the surround sound system's amplifier or receiver.
4. Set the surround sound system's amplifier or receiver on a surround sound audio mode.
Hook Up Surround Sound to a Comcast Receiver Using HDMI
5. Connect the Comcast receiver's HDMI port to the HDMI port on the surround sound system's receiver or with a HDMI cable.
6. Turn on the Comcast receiver and the surround sound system's receiver.
7. Select the channel that the Comcast receiver is connected to on the surround sound system's receiver.
8. Set the surround sound system's receiver on a surround sound audio mode.
Hook Up Surround Sound to a Comcast Receiver Using Coaxial Cable
9. Connect the Comcast receiver's coaxial audio port to the matching port on the surround sound system's receiver or amplifier with a coaxial cable.
10. Turn on the Comcast receiver and the surround sound system's receiver or amplifier.
11. Select the channel that the Comcast receiver is connected to on the surround sound system's receiver or amplifier.
12. Set the surround sound system's amplifier or receiver on a surround sound audio mode.
Tips Warnings
Because HDMI connections only use one cable, they can be easier to configure.
If the surround sound system's amplifier does not connect to the TV, use the optical audio or coaxial connection types. It's preferable to connect the video from the Comcast receiver to the surround sound system's receiver, which connects to the TV than to have the audio and video feeds from the Comcast receiver go to separate destinations.
