Each Kohler kitchen faucet has what is called a ceramic disc cartridge inside the handle. This cartridge is a valve that controls the water flow into the faucet. One disc rotates over another one allowing inlet holes to align and water to pass through when the handle turns. If you ever need to repair a leak in the faucet, replacing this cartridge is your best bet. It takes about 10 minutes to change out the cartridge valve.
Instructions
1. Shut off the water valves underneath the sink on the hot and cold water pipes running to the faucet. This shuts off the water supply and prevents a spill when you remove the cartridge.
2. Unscrew the small, round screw on the bottom of the handle and remove it carefully. Take the handle off by lifting it off the faucet base.
3. Turn the bonnet, a rounded nut under the handle, counterclockwise and remove it. Unscrew the hexagonal nut underneath the cartridge stem, the square rod on top of the faucet, with a large pair of pliers.
4. Take the cartridge valve out of the faucet and replace it with a new one. Push the cartridge into place so the edge is flush with the side of the faucet body. Replace the retaining nut and tighten it with a pair of pliers.
5. Replace the bonnet and tighten it. Slide the handle on the stem and tighten the set screw with an Allen wrench.
