Crown moulding is a type of trim used as a decorative border. It is most commonly found along the seam between the wall and ceiling, but fireplace mantels, doors and windows can also be enhanced with moulding. Accenting windows with moulding has many benefits. It can serve as a functional but attractive covering for wall imperfections, add value to your home, create elegance and sophistication, and give a sense of completeness to a room.
Instructions
1. Pick a moulding that complements the surrounding decor and architectural elements of your home. Moulding styles run from simple to ornate, so there are ample choices.
2. Select a finish. Natural, stained or polyurethane are a few varieties available to choose from.
3. Order a small sample of crown moulding. What looks good online or under florescent lights in a hardware store doesn't always transcend in the home. Check the hue and texture of your sample moulding against the rest of your design scheme. View the sample during varying times of day in different light sources to ensure consistent color compatibility.
4. Cut out a paper or cardboard mock-up and tape it around the window frame. Use it to correct any size or scale issues before affixing the actual moulding to the wall.
5. Consider painting your crown moulding. Depending on the color you choose, you can create visual stimulation or temper the boldness of other colors working in the room.
