Renew A Pmp Certification

Professionals in business management can enhance their career options by maintaining their PMP certification.

Professionals in business management can raise their career potential by getting certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute (PMI). After initial certification, PMI requires PMP credential holders to renew their certification. In order to ensure continued professional growth and management competence, PMP professionals must complete continuing education training requirements to maintain and renew certification. Existing certificate holders who complete educational requirements by the renewal deadline set by PMI can renew their PMP credentials.

Instructions

1. Open the Twelve Ways to Earn PDUs page on the PMI website. (See resources.) In the PMP PMI certification system, you must earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) for every three-year certification period. You must complete the PDU credits before renewing your PMP certification. This PMI page gives you an overview of the various ways to earn professional development units. You also need to access the Project Management Professional (PMP) Credential Handbook to get more details on PMP training and PDU credits.

2. Decide which methods to use to earn your PMP continuing education credits. Earn and report your required PDU credits by the end of your current certification expiration date. You will receive a one-year suspension if you do not earn your credits by that time. You can earn your PDU credits over that suspension period to renew and get your certification back to normal status. Use the PMI Continuing Certification Requirements PDU Activity Reporting Form to report your credits as you earn them. Alternatively, you may log in or create an account online to report your PDU activities. (See resources.) Send the reporting forms to certccr@pmi.org or use the following address to send in the forms:

3. Wait for PMI to send you certification renewal instructions by e-mail. Log in at your account and renew online using the online certification system. (See resources.) Alternatively, download the Application for Certification Renewal form with the download link provided by PMI in the renewal instructions. The paper form is not posted online for the general public.

4. Pay the renewal fee. As of 2010, the renewal fee is $60 for members and $150 for non-members. Use a credit card when renewing your PMP certification online. Use a check or money order (payable to PMI) or wire transfer if using the paper renewal form. Call 610-356-4600 if you wish to set up a wire transfer. Submit the application and payment within 90 days after your current certification deadline. Use the same mailing address for sending in your PDU reporting forms.

Tips Warnings

You may also join as a PMI member to get the renewal discount, educational training and other PMI membership benefits. As of 2010, the standard annual fee is $129 to join and $119 to renew, $40 to join and $30 to renew for qualifying students and $60 per year for qualifying retirees. You can join or download an application on the Types of Memberships page. (See resources.)
