Garage floor paint

garage floor paint

My garage floor is in desperate need of paint. It has a couple big cracks that I plan on patching. What is the best paint for it to withstand lifting floor jacks and a tool dropping here and there? I was looking at behr paint. Any suggestions? Concrete stain is usually the best choice. Most of the floor coatings require a lot of surface prep for the coating to last. I used Rustoleum garage floor epoxy on my garage floor about 4 years ago. It still looks pretty much like the day I put it on (at least under the dirt and mud). It gets parked on daily and has had a lot of different stuff spilled or dropped on it. The biggest hassle was the prep. The surface has to be cleaned thoroughly. Any suggestions? i bought some epoxy type garage floor paint and did all the cleaning and drying etc.. it looks good and has lasted fairly well, but i keep my street rod sitting on it in the winter, and the tires pull the paint off when i moved it. it doesn't happen every time, but thought you should know. (i could have failed to clean a spot thoroughly?). the concrete stain seems to be a better idea. LUCK! Well will staining it bead up oil and solvents? Also, Im going to be patching a few big cracks and want to conceal them as much as possible? Was thinking of the behr epoxy? A concrete stain will seal the concrete, it just isn't as heavy a coating. Stains rarely peel but they will wear away over time/use. Some epoxy coatings wear well but they all require extensive prep or they are apt to fail. Im willing to do the prep work just want some opinions on a good one to use that will hide the repaired cracks. Does anyone have a brand or type to recommend? I used Rustoleum at about $50 a kit. It took two for a 26X30 garage. I'm happy with the results. I think Im going to use the quikrete stuff. Why one brand over another? To me it seems to be a marketing issue (oh, pretty colors on the packaging!) more than anything. What's your logic because I have to purchase one too. Can you get 'professional' stuff from somewhere, or is that too big of a PITA? Does this even exist? Any professionals in the industry have thoughts for us? Is the etching (muriatic acid?) phase absolutely necessary? Yeah, yeah, I'm sure that someone's gonna say, Yeah, it's necessary if you want it to last.... I think that I've answered my own question... With the acid phase what's the best way to deal with the toxic mess? Once I put this stuff on and scrub it in (or whatever's required), I assume that I'll rinse it off. I have a sizable driveway (65' long) that's decently sloped, so this stuff'll travel down, and into the street... Is this a concern, or is there a good way to contain it? Thanks! SkydiverMN The quikrete comes with the acid etcher for almost the same price. Skydiver - there is a pro brand of garage floor epoxy paint. At least that's how they advertize mthemselves. Google UCoatit. IIRC it was about $300 to do my garage floor. I opted for the Rustoleum. The muriatic acid etch is pretty mild. I don't think the runoff is a problem. I just painted my garage floor today using the Behr 1-part epoxy and it came out really nice. Just follow the instructions and make sure you do a good prep...Here is what I did... Started out with Behr cleaner and degreaser. I rented a floor cleaning machine with a stiff brush from HD for $30. After I rinsed I etched the floor with the Behr concrete etcher...also used the machine. I rinsed out all the chemicals with a pressure washer and let the floor fry for a week and a half. You want to make sure it drys really well... Also, make sure to wash the chemicals out of your driveway very well, they stain...Im going to hit the stains with some cleaner and a pressure washer in the AM I applied one coat of behr concrete primer (use crappy bruches/rollers for this, the stuff doesnt wash off easy, I threw everything out after I was done.) I let the primer dry 16 hrs. I applied one coat of the 1-part epoxy paint which you can get tinted to almost any color. I also used the color flakes. Tomorrow I am sealing the floor in the AM with a clear low gloss sealant, and Ill be done. The prep is the hardest part and most time consuming. The painting went very easy, but if you dont prep well the hot tires will pick up the paint. Hopefully it all lasts at least a few yrs before needing touch up... Good luck!
