Teenage sleepovers often involve makeovers.
The teenage years are times when close friendships are formed and sleepovers create fond youthful memories. Deciding what to do at sleepovers depends upon the interests and personalities of the teens. Do activities that each teen finds interesting and enjoys. Chances are a gathering of teen girls or boys who are all friends is going to end up being enjoyable no matter what activities are planned.
Themes
Follow a theme for the sleepover. An '80s theme could feature teens dressed up as Mr. T, Boy George and other '80s stars; games with '80s trivia; gummi bears, Starburst and other '80s candies; music from the B-52s and Billy Joel and movies like "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Ferris Beuller's Day Off." Plan sleepovers to watch highly-anticipated televised events together, such as the Super Bowl, MTV Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Grammy Awards or the "American Idol" finale. Predict the winners before an awards show, and give a prize to the teen with the most correct.
Crafts
Decorate flip flops with ribbon, rhinestones, silk flowers or feathers, or string colorful and decorative beads onto elastic jewelry craft wire to make necklaces and bracelets. Draw names and create scrapbook keepsakes for each other, using printed photos of the day's activities and a variety of paper, glitter, markers and other scrapbooking materials. Photograph your time swimming together, taking a trip to the mall, roller skating and doing each other's hair and makeup for makeovers or wacky makeunders.
Games
Play board games like Trivial Pursuit, Scattergories or Cranium, or create your own games with various household objects. Examples include rolling quarters down a table to land one between a fork's prongs, balancing three golf balls on top of each other or shooting rubber bands to knock over a triangle of six empty soda cans. When playing Charades or Pictionary, act out or draw words or phrases that pertain to the sleepover theme, teenage lingo or current popular songs, singers or television and movie titles. Teens also enjoy pool, ping pong, foosball, air hockey and motion gaming systems like Xbox Kinect.
Food and Drinks
Decorate cakes or cupcakes to take home after the sleepover, or set out different kinds of ice cream and toppings to make your own sundaes. Teenagers might enjoy sipping non-alcoholic takes on alcoholic drinks. A Virgin Pina Colada blends pineapple juice, coconut cream and crushed ice, while a Virgin Mimosa combines sparkling cider, orange juice and lemon juice in a sugar-rimmed glass. Serve drinks in cocktail glasses or coconut shells with straws and cocktail umbrellas.
Outdoors
Be active outdoors with basketball, baseball, water gun or balloon fights, laser tag or paintball. With the equipment's light-up features, laser tag is particularly enjoyable around dusk. Equipment can be purchased at stores for home play, or teens can play at nearby entertainment facilities. For safety reasons, wear the proper face masks, neck and chest guards and elbow and knee protectors when playing paintball. If weather permits, set up a tent in your backyard for the teens, and roast hot dogs and make S'mores over a firepit.
