The Old Dominion State is not just for lovers: Virginia has copious outdoor adventure games for families, couples, school groups or friends looking to try something exhilarating outside. The Chesapeake Bay, Appalachian Mountains, Ohio River basin and Appalachian Plateau provide a variety of topographies to explore, and a variety of potential activities.
Outdoor Adventure Social Club
The club has horsebackriding trail outings statewide.
The Outdoor Adventure Social Club offers a wide array of outdoor activities for those who want to explore the natural wonders of the Dogwood State. The club has activities on weekday nights and weekends yearround. Outing opportunities include backpacking, caving, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, skiing and zip lining. Membership fees are $35 per month or $228 per year as of March 2011. Membership includes free use of all gear on activities and discounts on the individual activity fee. The group hosts events statewide.
Hogback Mountain Paintball
Hogback does special event large-scale battles several times each year.
Hogback Mountain Paintball's facilities cover more than 70 acres of land in the northeast corner of Virginia. The property has 14 paintball courses that range from dense forests, to obstacle courses, to "scenario" courses. There is no minimum group size required to play, although reservations are recommended. Rental play for a full day that includes gun, 500 units of ammo and all day air is $45, as of March 2011. The course provides a basic lunch for under $10, and they are open every Saturday and Sunday for walk-ons from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and during the week based on group reservations.
Battle Reenactments
The reenactments also feature guided tours and lectures.
More Civil War battles took place in Virginia than any other state. Today, the Dogwood State honors its history with several Civil War battle reenactments every year, several of which accept volunteer participation with some preparation. The battles include the Battle of Petersburg, the Battle of Bristoe Station, the Battle of Cedar Creek and the skirmish at Jeffersonville. Those interested in participating should contact their local historical society. Most reenactments have a small entrance fee of about $5.
Parasail Virginia Beach
Parasailing is an exhilarating way to explore the beautiful Atlantic coast of Virginia from a bird's eye view. Rudee Inlet Parasail has been in business for nearly 30 years, and is run by former maritime police officers. Prices are available through direct quotes only, and discounts are offered for large groups. Rudee is open every day beginning at 8 a.m., and the average trip lasts about an hour and a half.
