There are many restricted items for air travel.
Since the events of September 11, 2001, air travel regulations and restrictions have drastically changed. Passengers and employees are prohibited from bringing hundreds of items onto the plane in their carry-on luggage. Due to repeated attempts since 2001 to disrupt airplane travel, even more items are restricted. Most of these items are limited to carry-on luggage and can be stored in checked luggage with certain precautions.
Sharp Items
Nearly all items with sharp edges or blades are prohibited. This includes swords, razor blades, knives, scissors, ice picks and axes, although they may be placed in checked luggage. Plastic or rounded butter knives are acceptable, but this is up to the discretion of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel. Plastic, disposable shaving razors and replacement cartridges are permitted.
Sports Equipment
All sporting goods items that can act as a striking instrument are restricted to checked baggage. This includes baseball and cricket bats, lacrosse and hockey sticks, croquet mallets, pool sticks, golf clubs and ski poles. Bows and arrows are not permitted in carry-on luggage.
Firearms and Weapons
Firearms or items resembling firearms may not be brought onto airplanes. Guns, replica guns, pellet guns, paintball guns, starter pistols, flare guns and spear guns must be in checked luggage. Even cigarette lighters that look like firearms are prohibited. Likewise, ammunition, compressed air cartridges or firearm related items cannot travel with you on the plane. Weapons for martial arts or personal defense like brass knuckles, throwing stars, nunchuks, stun guns and pepper spray must be checked. When bringing a firearm in your checked luggage, you must notify the TSA and show them the weapon before checking the bag.
Explosives
Explosive materials of any kind are not permitted in airports, checked baggage or on planes. Plastic explosives, flares, grenades, dynamite and fireworks are not permitted. Explosive or flammable material like fuel, gunpowder and lighter fluid are strictly forbidden.
Miscellaneous
The TSA does not allow "disabling" chemicals on aircraft. These chemicals include bleach, chlorine, battery acid, tear gas and spray paint. Tools with edges or blunt ends are forbidden. This includes crow bars, hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers. Wrenches, pliers and screwdrivers are acceptable if they are less than seven inches long. Any items containing gels or liquids may not be brought in carry-on luggage. Even gel inserts for shoes and snow globes are not permitted. For carry-on luggage, you may bring liquids or gels in containers of less than 3.4 ounces.
