Paintball is one of the most popular extreme sports in the United States. Similar to combat play, people from one team try to track down and shoot someone from the opposition. As its name implies, guns are used to shoot balls of paint at the enemy. The first paintball pistol was invented in 1970 to mark cattle and trees that needed to be excavated. One of the most common types of paintball weapons is called a sniper gun.
Function
Sniper rifles, like regular rifles, are incapable of rapid fire. They do not do well in battles where the shooter must make split-second decisions. Sniper guns are also normally larger than other paintball guns, so they are more difficult to carry. For these reasons, paintball sniper rifles are normally carried by team members who are responsible for covering the front-line members more closely involved with the battle action.
Features
An essential aspect of the sniper paintball gun is the barrel. The most useful paintball sniper gun has a barrel length of 12 to 14 inches. Flatline barrels, which are slightly curved, often prove to work the best, since people can shoot them long distances by putting a backspin on the paintball. This makes the paintballs fly straight ahead through the air, rather than arcing. Being able to shoot a ball straight ahead can be very important to being successful in this game, especially when playing where there are a lot of trees. A flatline barrel paint gun can sometimes add another 100 feet to your usual shooting distance.
Significance
This flatline barrel offers another benefit: enemies are frequently confused by the straight direction of the incoming sniper shot. They are more used to keeping out of the way of paintballs that fly in curves or arcs. Such shots create an optical illusion, which makes them appear slower than other types of fire. This throws people off guard and they end up getting hit.
Good snipers spend considerable time practicing their shots. As with any sport, the more individuals practice under different conditions, the better chance they have in beating out the competition.
Effects
The sight or scope is another important part of the sniper weapon. Many shooters like a magnified scope, and others will only use a red-dot sight. Some more adventurous players even add both types of sight rails to their gun. Determining which one to mount on top and which one to mount on the side is based on personal preference. It takes a great deal of practice to successfully use either sight choice, let alone both. A good paintball sniper rifle must have an excellent sight since you cannot miss on your first shot. Most likely, you will not get another chance once your location is known. Snipers do not shoot quickly from the hip. Rather, they aim very carefully and do their best to make every shot count. Thus, the better the sight, the better the chance of making one's shot.
Considerations
Despite its benefits, however, using a sniper rifle does have its drawbacks. If you are standing more than 100 feet from your target, it will take the paint too much time to hit, break and splatter. In addition, paintball sniper rifles may frequently misfire or not reach the target when the velocity is too high. Paintball snipers with more experience suggest that the velocity of the rifle be set to approximately 280 feet per second for maximum results.
