War Shooting Games

War provides a plausible context and exciting setting for many video games, especially shooting games that can put you on either side of a major conflict. Modern crises that could arise through potential political shifts or extreme conditions give a lot of possible settings for fictional conflicts to take place anywhere in the world. There are several games that offer plausible scenarios of conflict in the present or the very near future.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

After a horrific incident at a Russian airport that claims the lives of hundreds of civilians, America is framed for the atrocity and finds itself under invasion. Viewing the action unfold from the perspectives of two characters, fight your way across several environments, from the icy mountains of Kazakhstan to the hauntingly familiar suburbs of Washington. Dramatic set-pieces are around every corner where you often defend yourself and others armed with the latest weapons and technology.

Homefront

War comes uncomfortably close to the front door in this fictional conflict penned by "Apocalypse Now" writer John Milius. Set in the year 2027, the United States has been invaded and occupied by the Greater Korean Republic. As a member of the resistance, the player fights for freedom against an overwhelming enemy that has turned his home into a violent police state. Witness the action on foot wielding an array of weapons or get behind the wheel to pilot vehicles in this explosive first-person shooter.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

Step over the border into Mexico as a member of the 5th Special Forces Group, also known as the Ghosts. A civil war is raging south of the border and the conflict could spill over into the United States with the threat of nuclear weapons being used. Cross vast cityscapes on foot or in vehicles such as Black Hawk helicopters. An integrated cover system allows you to hug parts of the environment to stay out of harm's way as you battle fierce Mexican Army rebels and mercenaries.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

A conflict over oil leads the United States to drive Chinese PLA forces from the fictional island of Skira. The player controls a soldier in a squad of four, with the rest of the team made up of other players over the Internet or operated by artificial intelligence. Tactical movements and planning ahead are rewarded over twitchy reactions and rushed attempts to gun down enemies, with a focus on realism being key to the game. One shot is enough to kill you, and even if you survive, the untreated wound may cause you to bleed to death.
