Southern California Summer Overnight Camps

Allow your child to experience the outdoors this summer.

Southern California may already be a haven for many fun summertime activities, such as beach-bumming and Disneyland, but many parents can opt to steer their children toward educational fun in the sun by enrolling them in an overnight summer camp. With many different summer camp experiences to choose from, it shouldn't be hard to find one that sparks your child's interest.

Pali Overnight Adventures

This summer camp experience is set in the San Bernardino Mountains of southern California. Pali Overnight Adventures offers campers 16 specialty camps to choose from such as watersports, fashion design, culinary or film studies. Each program also allows campers to choose from a variety of afternoon and night activities, such as Hollywood stunts, jet skis, rafting, and karaoke. Campers must be between the ages of 9 and 16 to stay with Pali Overnight Adventures. The camp charges $1,615 per week to stay with sessions beginning on June 19 and ending August 20. It's recommended to register your child early as each speciality camp has a size capacity.

YMCA Camp Surf

For more than 30 years, the San Diego YMCA ran this fun in the sun surfing camp in Imperial Beach, California. The camp provides week-long overnight sessions, which includes instruction from experienced professionals in surfing, boogie-boarding, and ocean sports. Each camp program is separated into age groups ranging from 8 to 16 years old. Campers can enjoy surfing activities by day and campfire stories by night. While each program provides unique and challenging experiences, a primary focus on team skills, nutrition, and respect for the ocean is always prevalent. Each YMCA Camp Surf program has a fee of $545 per week. Registration can be complete or forms printed online at camp.ymca.org.

Rawhide Ranch

Since 1963, Rawhide Ranch has been running an overnight summer camp with a strong focus on western culture and horseback riding. Located in the southern California town of Bonsall, activities include western riding lessons, animal and horse science classes, animal care training, horseback vaulting and gymnastics lessons. The camp also provides many other activities, such as archer, roping lessons, theater, rodeo or poolside activities. Rawhide Ranch's summer camp is designed for campers ages 7 to 15 who possess little to intermediate skill in horseback riding. A one-week camp session is $895, with an $825 price tag for those who sign their child up before January 31, 2011. Registration can be completed online at rawhideranch.com.
