Video Games & Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Video games have slowly evolved into the primary toy for both children and young adults. The video games are so realistic and addicting that consumers often spend several hours a day playing. Sometimes the consumer plays constantly without taking a break for several hours, which can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome "occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist." The syndrome causes a sharp pain in the hand.

Video Games

Video games require the use of the hands and, more specifically, the fingers.

Correlation

Since the fingers are constantly moving for extended periods of time, the chances of getting carpal tunnel increase.

Symptoms

Symptoms of carpal tunnel include burning, tingling or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and fingers. The thumb and index fingers receive the most pain. Some patients feel as if they have swollen fingers, although the fingers do not appear swollen.

Prevention

The most obvious prevention is to reduce video game playing by an extensive amount, especially if you play over 5 hours each day. Take breaks if you plan to play for more than an hour.
