Coin Operated Games

There are many types of coin operated games.

Coin-operated games are a common part of everyday life. From the corner grocery store to the Las Vegas strip, they are available for almost everyone to play. Drop in a few coins and you will have minutes to hours of fun and entertainment. From classic pinball games to the latest in video gaming, coin-operated games are a quick bit of fun for a cheap price.

Pinball

The invention of the first coin-operated pinball machine was in 1931. This machine didn't resemble the pinball machines of today, as it didn't have flippers. Flippers came in 1947 with a game called Humpty Dumpty. Many pinball machines today are a complex array of LCD lights and electronic scoring, but the concept remains the same as in the beginning. Put in a coin, get a ball, get points every time that the ball bounces off an item in the game.

Claw Machine

Claw machines are common in pizza restaurants, other family restaurants and grocery stores. Put in the designated amount of money to turn on the machine. Move the joystick to make a claw on a wire move back and forth and side to side. When you think that you have the claw centered over a prize, push a button to let the claw drop. If you centered the claw correctly, it will drop on the prize and grab it, then move to the release slot and drop it for you to retrieve.

Slot Machines

The first slot machines appeared in San Francisco in the late 1800s. These mechanical machines featured card designs instead of the more familiar fruit and shapes of today. Winners would receive free drinks and other prizes from bar owners. Games remained mechanically based until 1964, with the invention of the first slot machine with a microprocessor. Computers run all of today's machines, with virtual slot machines being popular with online casinos worldwide.

Video Games

Atari created the first coin operated video game with Pong, a simple game of ping pong illustrated with a square "ball" and two rectangular "paddles." While it is simplistic, Pong ushered in a multi-billion dollar industry that is still going strong today. The industry moved from Pong to Space Invaders, and then to Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Today's games are multi-player marvels of color and design, with Pong only a distant memory.
