Campgrounds Near Fort Custer Michigan

Fort Custer Recreation Area offers plenty for the outdoor enthusiast.


Fort Custer Recreation Area is between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek in Augusta, Michigan. The area has 3,033 acres that include a prairie restoration, wooded wilderness, three lakes and the Kalamazoo River. Each lake has a boat launch and swim beach areas, and there is a universally accessible fishing pier. There are 25 miles of trails marked for terrain and physical challenge for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Hunting is allowed during hunting season.

Fort Custer Recreation Area's campground has 219 campsites with electric, restrooms and showers. Campers enjoy fire pits, picnic tables and picnic areas. The campground has campsites for tents, RVs and has rustic cabins available. The campground offers immediate access to the lakes, trails and planned activities within the recreation area.

Shady Bend Campground


Shady Bend Campground is two miles from Fort Custer on 3,000 feet of water frontage on the Kalamazoo River. The calm river is ideal for canoeing, tubing and fishing. Campsites have water and electric hookup, cement patios, fire pits and picnic tables. Shady Bend accommodates tents and full-size motor coaches. The campground has restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, LP gas and a dump station. Shady Bend has two-hour tubing trips on the river.

Cold Brook Park


Cold Brook Park is a 275-acre Kalamazoo County park just five miles east of Fort Custer and 10 miles from downtown Kalamazoo. The park has access to a chain of three lakes, all of which allow speed boating. There is a fishing pier and a sand swim beach. The park has a ball field, horseshoe pits, several nature paths and a championship 18-hole disc golf course where flying discs are used in place of traditional golf clubs and balls. The campground has 22 rustic campsites and 29 with electric and water hookups. All campsites have a fire pit and a picnic table. There are restrooms, showers and a dump station for campers.

Battle Creek MI Campground


Battle Creek MI Campground is five miles northeast of Fort Custer. Accommodations at the 125-acre campground range from rustic sites with no utility hookups to leveled camper sites with full hookups to air-conditioned cabins. The campground has two ponds for paddle boating, swimming, canoeing and fishing. The campground has a tennis court, basketball court, badminton, horseshoes and nature trails for outdoor recreation. Inside is a heated pool, hot tub, sauna, air hockey, pingpong, pool tables, sauna, dart boards and two TV lounges. The campground has a large, open field for outdoor activities and a nightly community campfire.
