Burlap is an excellent material for ghillie suit construction.
Constructing your own ghillie suit can be tedious and take over 100 hours of work, but doing it yourself can provide you with a well-fitted ghillie suit that has customized camouflage for the region you plan on hunting or photographing. To complete any ghillie suit you need to construct a ghillie hood. While some hunters, nature photographers and military professionals use a separate ghillie headpiece, others find it convenient to have a ghillie hood attached to their suit.
Instructions
1. Cut a piece of black netting with the scissors about twice the size of your boonie hat or 24 inches by 24 inches.
2. Sow the black netting to the top of the boonie hat with the front edge of the netting lined up with the brim of the hat. Extra netting should hang off the sides and back of the boonie hat only. Use simple stitches and tie them off with a square knot spaced every 4 inches until you have covered the hat.
3. Cut 1-inch-wide strips of camouflage burlap about 1 foot long with the scissors. You need enough strips to cover the netting on the boonie hat, so make at least 25. You can make more later if necessary.
4. Tie the end of each strip of camouflage burlap onto the netting sewn to the boonie hat, leaving about 10 inches of burlap hanging off the netting. Use a simple square knot to secure the burlap strips to the boonie hat netting.
5. Tear each camouflage burlap strip repeatedly until they are all completely frayed. Be sure to tear each strip of burlap as randomly as possible to help break up your ghillie hood's outline.
6. Place your new ghillie hood on your head while wearing your ghillie suit and use a mirror to make note of which squares of netting make contact with your ghillie suit around the sides and rear of your head. This is where you will attach the ghillie hood to your ghillie suit.
7. Sew the netting hanging off the back and sides of the ghilie hat to the ghillie suit along the netting squares you noted earlier. Continue to sew the excess squares of netting below the long squares to reinforce the connection of the ghillie hood to the ghillie suit.
