Flecktarn camouflage uses smaller dots of color than other types of camouflage.
Flecktarn is a type of spotted camouflage developed by the German military. Sometimes also called fleck, flecktarn comprises three, four, five or six colors in a spotted pattern. The exact number and colors of the spots vary according to the type of terrain in which you plan to use the camouflage. The spots eliminate the boundaries between colors and provide a camouflage effect. The pattern, originally designed for use in temperate woodland areas, has also been adapted for desert use through the varying of the colors.
Instructions
1. Place a bit of each color paint into a paint tray. Lay out your brushes and a dish of water. Place a rag or piece of paper under the material you are painting to ease cleanup.
2. Clean and dry the material you want to paint. If painting on metal, remove any oil or grease. Wash the material with soap and water, and dry it thoroughly.
3. Use the black and white paints to lighten or darken the green colors to create a range of colors that suit your tastes, or that match the area where you plan to use the camouflage. You should have one dark green area, one light green and one color between the two.
4. Place some of the brown paint on a large brush. The exact size of the brush will depend on the material you are painting. Dab the brown paint on the material so it makes large spots. Aim to cover around half of the material with brown spots. The spots can overlap in places but should not all run together.
5. Use the medium brush to dab on spots of dark green. Dab paint on areas with no color, as well as overlapping some of the brown. Clean and dry the brush.
6. Use a medium-size brush to dab on spots of a medium green color. Layer the paint on top of and next to spots of other colors, as well as on areas with no color. Clean the brush, then dab on spots of the lighter green in the same way. At this point, most of the material should be covered in spots of paint.
7. Mix black and white paints together to make dark gray. Dab spots of gray onto the material.Create fewer gray areas than green or brown areas; the gray will provide a shadowy effect on the finished material.
8. Use a small brush to fill in any areas not already covered in paint. Dab on any of the colors you wish.
