Private scholarships are granted by businesses, companies, nonprofit organizations, societies, clubs and unions. Private scholarships can often have more stringent application guidelines, but the more scholarships you qualify and apply for, the greater your chances are of receiving one.
Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship
This program has been awarding students with great financial need since 2001. Students can use this scholarship to pay off their college tuition or to enter graduate school. The panel of judges will determine a winner based on the quality of students' personal essays. Past academic performance and financial need is not considered. This private scholarship is open to college, graduate and adult students. Eligibility requirements include being a United States citizen, being in school or planning to attend school within 12 months. Those who are interested must fill out a short application and answer a short essay question.

Ayn Rand Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest
This scholarship awards both college undergraduates and graduate students. This contest requires an essay on "Atlas Shrugged", the novel by Ayn Rand. The first prize is $10,000, second prize is $2,000 and the third prize is $1,000. Twenty finalists will win $100 and 20 semifinalists will win $50. Judging is based on style and content. They are looking for essays that are clear, organized and well-written. Applicants must submit an essay based on one of the three topics that deal with the novel. There is no application required for this contest, but applicants must provide a cover sheet with their essays.

Gates Millenium Scholars Program
The United Negro Fund sponsors this scholarship program for college students. Students can use this scholarship to pursue their degree at an undergraduate or graduate college or university. Eligibility requirements include being African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian or Hispanic. Students should also have a legal permanent residence in the United States, a GPA of 3.3 or above and enrollment at a United States college or university. They should also meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria and submit three forms, which can be found on the website.
