Qualifications For Sniper School

Snipers engage targets in hostile conditions.


Snipers are specially trained in advanced marksmanship and can engage targets from ranges in hostile conditions that are impossible for normal riflemen. All candidates are screened for physical fitness, vision and mental stability before selection and training begins. Commanders, assessors and specialized medical personnel examine each applicant before approval for the program.


Vision


20/20 vision is required.


Candidates must have 20/20 vision. Corrective lenses are considered a liability; however, a waiver may be granted if the individual is exceptionally qualified.


Psychological Examination


Sniper candidates must pass psychological examinations.


Highly qualified medical professionals must develop, conduct and approve psychological examinations on all candidates. The examination must include a psychological history and application of the Minnesota Multi-Phasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).


Test Scores


ASVAB exam scores play a role in sniper selection.


Applicants must have a general technical (GT) score of 110 or higher, and a combat (CO) score of 110 or a surveillance and communications (SC) score of 110 on the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam.


Rank


Candidates must be E4 or above.


Candidates must be at least ranked E4 Corporal (CPL) or Specialist (SPC) and have Level 2 Secret, or Confidential clearance.
